On Your People: No One Learns to Love Alone

04 Today's Prayer for Tomorrow's Lover

I experienced my first community love intention setting workshop last nite. If anything, it’s affirming to know I am not alone and other humans find value in being in community to amplify love and speak truth into the quality and characteristics of their desired partnerships.

I notice questions coming up for me today after sitting with the practitioners of love. I am asking these questions of God or perhaps you, my prayer partners, readers, listeners, lovers. Maybe you have some insight or validating words to share with me as answers to these questions:

Who taught me how to love?

Have I been a witness to healthy and loving committed relationships?

Who teaches me how to love you, lover, before we commit to commitment?

Here is how God responded:

Dear Carmen, these are well-intended and fine questions. And you are asking Me about relating and relationship- not about love.

Love is the creative continuum and source of your life. Love exists because you exist.

Relationships on the other hand…they are best and by definition experienced in community with your kin. Relationship are how you may express and grow and deepen in love. And you and your lover will not be left alone to figure this out. When the students are ready, the teachers appear. Look around you.

dear lover,

I trust our current relationships are making wise offerings into how we learn to relate well with one another

I trust the discomfort I experience with former lovers, current friends, old colleagues, and past business partners are teaching how me how to name my needs, make requests, and create boundaries with you

I trust the kin who love us deeply now are the practice ground on which we will grow and sustain a loving committed partnership with each other

I trust wise and kind eldership will emerge for our relationship

I trust our people are our teachers

and our people are here now.

and so it is

as love,
